Mental illness indirectly will affect all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague. Approx 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime and it is estimated 10% - 20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder, the single most disabling group of disorders worldwide.
Once depression is recognized, help can make a difference for 80% of people who are affected allowing them to get back to their regular activities. Mental illness is increasingly threatening the lives of our children; with Canada's youth suicide rate the third highest in the industrialized world.
This will be my 5th year walking in the RBC Run for the Kids to raise money for this very worthy cause to help our children and youth.
Over the last five years with you generous support, I've raised over $12,000 to support the critical work of the Family Navigation Project at Sunnybrook. This non-profit program helps Canadian youth struggling with mental health and addiction issues.
Only one in five young people will get the specialized mental health service they desperately need due to the sheer complexity of our mental health system. The trained staff at Sunnybrook’s Family Navigation Project will help youth and their families to get the right care, at the right time.
