Once again I’m participating in the RBC Race for the Kids Toronto for youth mental health.
Now that we’re more open about mental health, we realize how common mental illness is: as many as two million young people in Canada are struggling with issues such as anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression or addiction. But finding appropriate, timely help for young people in a complex system is difficult. That’s why Sunnybrook established the Family Navigation Project, to guide those in need as quickly as possible to the right services.
Untreated mental illness robs young people of their potential. Recently I met a parent who came to the Family Navigation Project for help. Hearing her talk, I could sense the anguish, the uncertainly, the fear she experienced. As a parent it struck a chord at a deep, personal level. And I heard how grateful she was for the help she received for her child.
As the newly minted CEO at Sunnybrook, people stop me in the halls to say thanks for what we have done for them, or for their loved ones. When it matters most, we change lives.
That’s why I’m asking you to support me for the RBC Race for the Kids.
